چکیده

In this paper, we employ a non-decimated wavelet decomposition to analyse long-term variations of the teleconnection pattern monthly indices (the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Southern Oscillation) and the relationship of these variations with eddy kinetic energy contents (KE) in the atmosphere of mid-latitudes and tropics. Major advantage of using this tool is to isolate shortand long-term components of fluctuations. Such analysis allows revealing basic periodic behaviours for the North Atlantic Oscillations (NAO) indices such as the 4–8-year and the natural change of dominant phase. The main results can be posed as follows. First, if the phases of North Atlantic and Southern Oscillations vary synchronously with the 4–8-year period then the relationship between the variations of the NAO indices and the KE contents is the most appreciable. Second, if the NAO phase tends to abrupt changes then the impact of these variations on the eddy kinetic energy contents in both midlatitudes and tropics is more significant than for the durational dominance of certain phase.

Baroclinic annular variability in the Northern Hemisphere

1 Large-scale variability in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) circulation can be 2 viewed in the context of three primary types of structures: 1) teleconnection patterns; 2) 3 a barotropic annular mode; and 3) a baroclinic annular mode. The barotropic annular 4 mode corresponds to the northern annular mode (NAM) and has been examined 5 extensively in previous research. Here we examine the spatial s...

Rainfall warning Based on indexs teleconnection, Synoptic Patterns of Atmospheric Upper Levels and Climatic elements a case study of Karoun basin

Rainfall prediction plays an important role in flood management and flood alert. With rainfall information, it is possible to predict the occurrence of floods in a given area and take the necessary measures. Due to the fact that the three months of January, February and March are most floods and most precipitation is occurring this quarter, this study aimed to investigate the factors affecting ...

The partitioning of attached and detached eddy motion in the atmospheric surface layer using Lorentz wavelet ltering

Townsend's (1976) attached eddy hypothesis states that the turbulent structure in the constant stress layer can be decomposed into attached and detached eddy motion. This paper proposes and tests methodology for separating the attached and detached eddy motion from time series measurements of velocity and temperature. The proposed methodology is based on the time-frequency localization and lter...

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer

Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...
